In For The Long Haul: A Kingston Weekenders’ Love Story UPSTATER MAGAZINE WINTER 2015 | BY KANDY HARRIS | PORTRAIT BY MATT PETRICONE James Aguiar and Mark Haldeman did what most people do when they consider buying a second home in the Hudson Valley: They talked about it. A lot. “We would be those weekend guests, all the time, who talked about moving and getting a place and finding a place, and we never did,” explains Aguiar, the fashion director for high-end magazine publishing brand Mode
The National Fashion Director at Modern Luxury, James Aguiar, is a romantic…and a great cook. We stopped by for dinner at the chic Park Slope apartment he shares with his partner, Mark Haldeman. The two are no doubt a fashion power duo; Aguiar is a necessary fixture at Modern Luxury and Haldeman runs the U.S retail business for Paul Smith.
FURRY PURSUIT: Modern Luxury, the regional magazine publisher, wanted its September issues to make a big, fat fashion statement. So when national fashion director, James Aguiar, attended the opening of “Queen of the Night” at Manhattan’s Diamond Horseshoe nightclub with his friends Linda Fargo and Giovanna Battaglia — the latter of whom happens to be creative director of the theater production — he knew he found his prime location for a fashion shoot.
Cher’s favorite designer Bob Mackie attended a VIP dinner with the cast of the new Broadway musical “The Cher Show” at the Lambs Club. Mackie — the venerable costume creator for the pop icon — was overheard at the meal telling Modern Luxury’s James Aguiar, who was clad in a vintage Moschino sequined suit, that: “It would look great if the butt was cut out and illusion netting placed [there] instead!”
Bergdorf Goodman style queen Linda Fargo continued her birthday celebration with an intimate dinner at the Brooklyn apartment of Manhattan magazine’s James Aguiar and his partner Mark Haldeman. Guests on Saturday included fotog Björn Wallander, Oscar-nominated costume designer Michael Wilkinson, Sophie Elgort and her financier husband Eric Von Stroh. –– ADVERTISEMENT –– The group enjoyed a meal from the new Bergdorf’s cookbook, to which James and Linda contributed recipes.

“Empire” star Taraji P. Henson nearly posed barefoot for Modern Luxury’s Manhattan magazine. Fashion director James Aguiar had four suitcases of clothes shipped to Los Angeles for a cover shoot. Only three arrived.
Downsized, But Uplifted By Michael Silverberg Photographs by Thomas Loof Mark Haldeman and James Aguiar’s Park Slope apartment is stuffed with luxe antique finds like 1940s-era triptychs of Greek statuary and turn-of-the-century drawings. It boasts such typically un–New York City amenities as a dressing room and an OCD-certified “shoe library.” It hardly looks like an exercise in downsizing.
HAUTE COUTURE COUP: Modern Luxury has earned bragging rights: the regional magazine publisher was the first to get its hands on Chanel’s fall 2015 couture just hours after the collection debuted on a Paris runway on July 7. It came about after James Aguiar, national fashion director, previewed the collection during a New York market appointment and started a dialogue with the brand

Brooklyn Baroque By Alexandra Lange A two-designer household can sometimes be a troubled one. But ever since James Aguiar and Mark Haldeman met ten years ago, they have—mostly—been on the same style wavelength. “The mannequin and the eye painting, that is definitely more me,” says Aguiar, a former fashion director at Bergdorf Goodman who’s often on Full Frontal Fashion. “I used to do windows, and part of me loved getting a person to stop
